About AWE
From Brainstorming to Fruition
Much of my career I have spent dreaming. Dreaming of new possibilities, new ways to do things, new ways to help others and new ways to share knowledge. When I discovered podcasts, I immediately was inspired. Until this point, I can't say I really was fully aware of my strengths or even knew of any special talents I may have had. Leadership was always a fascinating position to me and much of my reading and podcast listening surrounded this topic. I was interviewed for and was offered a different leadership opportunity than what I applied for. This is where I met the leader who would inspire me. Dr. Annie Fridh became my direct supervisor and is responsible for putting names to my strengths and igniting my creativity. My love for learning, creativity and humility gave me an ability to connect with people and a desire to always do better. During this leadership position I learned much and gave too much. I became severely burned out and moved back to a therapy role at a community college. It was here were I met a dear friend who would later host a podcast with me called, AWE. LaShawna Moyle did more again to bolster my creativity and we were able to create some beautiful podcast episodes. We created a season 1 and a season 2, after which I received a offer to work in a K-12 system to be an administrator who focuses on the mental health and wellbeing of the student body.
The development of AWE took place in a brainstorming session with Teresa McElroy, LaShawna Moyle and I. Teresa had graciously allowed LaShawna and I time to develop a podcast and record episodes. Mark Munger, our local radio station manager, helped us with recording and editing. Shortly after this we began the nerve wracking process of recording and putting our voices out into the world. It was an AMAZING process. Together, LaShawna and I brought AWE to life. After leaving this place of employment and moving to my current position as a K-12 administrator; it became apparent we could not coordinate recording episodes and the process that goes into creating. AWE was all encompassing and covered a large variety of topics with the aim of "helping people." That was our only mission and sole purpose. Today, I am starting a blog with the focus on leadership, relationships and you which are all core passions of mine. LaShawna may make guest appearances to share her thoughts on these areas, but I will be the sole contributor to this AWE blog.
The website is AWE-ECO which is with a long E. The purpose of this is intentional and the first responsibility of a leader. It is to influence an entire ecosystem and be a sole contributor to the success of the organizations culture. With you, these domains will help you to thrive and grow. In your relationships, the ecosystem is much impacted by how you and your partner are working together and functioning. I have waited until now to unveil the meaning of the acronym AWE. Authenticity, Wellbeing and Empowerment are the pillars which support an ecosystem where each of these pillars is fostered. Authenticity for people to be themselves. Wellbeing for people to thrive. And empowerment for people fly to their greatest strength and ability. It is our hope to share our knowledge related to leadership, relationships and you in these domains. We hope this will inspire others to focus on creating a AWE-ECOsystem where the following happens: You show up as you to thrive and fly to your greatest potential.
About Me.
Hello!
I am Josh Van Zweden, LMSW, CADC and I will be the main contributor to this blog. I attended the University of Missouri and the University of Iowa where I completed my undergraduate degree and my graduate degree. When I graduated from my undergrad my first stop on the career train was in a position where I was a direct support staff with a group of adolescent boys, who were struggling with an addiction. The group of boys were enrolled in a 90-day residential treatment facility. It was my responsibility to be sure the schedule was followed and to administer treatment groups. I remained in this role for right at a year when I received a promotion to be a substance abuse counselor in an outpatient clinic. I was here for about 5 years. During that time, my responsibilities were to facilitate group, complete individual counseling and be in charge of the adolescent outpatient program in that area. While I was in this position, I went back to school and completed my graduate degree in Social Work. I then was promoted to a leadership position and became a Unit Coordinator for the adolescent program. It was here where I met Dr. Annie Fridh. I desired to be my best and poured all of my energy into this position and burned myself out after about 20 months. I then went to work for a community college as a therapist for the students in need as well as provide mental health programming on the campus. It was here where AWE was born and I met LaShawna Moyle, LMSW. We were able to show a need for adding another therapist and that is when we hired LaShawna. Then after about 2 years, I began to long for a chance at leadership and then moved to the role I currently hold as an administrator for student wellbeing and mental health in a K-12 system.

I am married to my beautiful wife of 15 years and together we are raising 3 boys. We are a busy family, but enjoy doing things outdoors. We are a Christian family and this is a value very important to us. This will come through in our blog as should other values I hold dear. I enjoy woodworking, various shop projects, taking care of the acreage we live on and chasing after my boys. My wife is a veterinarian and owns her own practice. This keeps us discussing leadership not only in our marriage, but also in both of our work lives. It is an honor to be supported by her and to be driven by her to take a step like creating a blog!
